The article explores the practice of the major city strategy updating and implementation, using the city of Ekaterinburg as the example. The authors' main task is to prove that the use of approaches combining sectoral and territorial types of planning, coordinating local priorities with national and regional directions of strategic development is the most appropriate and effective one for strategic management and strategy implementation of the major city. Currently, this issue faces various addressing forms in different municipalities due to the lack of unified methodological approaches. Consequently, on the one hand, the existing socio-economic development strategies fail to provide a clear reference to the territorial characteristics of the scheduled processes, on the other hand, it is difficult to identify specific goals, objectives, and main directions of the territory development in the territorial planning documents, especially in the order of priority of achieving them. Moreover, the regional and municipal strategic planning documents are rarely synchronized. The article draws attention to a new strategic document in the Russian strategic planning system - a development strategy for the administrative-territorial unit of a city (city district), which methodological specifics are undoubtedly relevant for the regional and municipal economies. Based on the analysis of the experience of the city of Ekaterinburg, the principles, stages, organizational structure of managing the development of the district development strategy are described. The results of the study will be useful to regional and municipal governments in the development, updating of the strategy of socio-economic development and the development of mechanisms for its implementation, and may also take a rightful place in the structure of scientific knowledge in the field of regional and municipal economy.
